Bill Simmons Construction and Heavy Equipment Co. Ltd. is the oldest continuously-operating family-run construction company in the Bahamas. Established in 1956 when Bill Simmons purchased his first delivery truck to haul lumber for the Maura Lumber Company, the company has grown to encompass a fleet of heavy construction equipment and a highly skilled workforce that can respond to construction demands throughout the Bahamas.

Our business is founded on the strong moral and ethical principles of Bill and Evie Simmons. Married for over 60 years before Bill passed away in 2012 at the age of 82, he and Evie raised 13 children while building the business as active members of the St. Barnabas Anglican Church congregation. Bill epitomized the values of honesty and hard work. He ensured that his children understood the importance of maintaining high standards and delivering work of the highest quality to all customers. A humble man, he was known to be firm, yet fair; compassionate, yet conservative; open to all people, yet dedicated to his family. Mrs. Simmons continues to be the moral compass for Bill Simmons Construction and Heavy Equipment. She is a regular visitor to our offices and a source of great inspiration to all our staff.

Quality, Safety, Reputation and Environment

Our commitment to quality and service is driven by our customer orientation. We strive to anticipate customer needs and to exceed expectations whenever we can.

Our commitment starts at the top. Our qualified management team is committed to the management of our activities and processes. Equipped with local knowledge and experience the Bill Simmons team is able to deliver large and small jobs in a timely manner . Our field staff follow formal Method Statements that describe the general approach to every work assignment, identify safety and environmental issues and mitigation strategies and establish the criteria for success in terms of standards to be met, productivity to be achieved and schedule for completion. Our Method Statements are supported by Inspection and Test Plans, Traffic Management Plans, Environmental Management Plans, Hurricane Preparedness Plans, Emergency Measures Plans and other plans as required by each assignment.

We record our daily progress using electronic journals linked to our PROLOG construction management system. We measure our performance through Customer Satisfaction Surveys, completion statistics, safety statistics, environmental statistics and quality statistics. We continuously monitor our Key Performance Indicators and take immediate action when we notice that performance is below expectations.

Our quality process usually starts with an estimate. We work hard to understand our customer’s needs and to clearly define the scope of work based upon our 50 plus years of experience in the industry. We will tell our customers up front if we see that they have missed something in their request for quotation – we do not like to surprise our customers with claims for extra work after we have started on a project. We believe that the best projects are those that start with a clear definition of the work and a mutual understanding of how long it will take to perform and what it will cost. We accept both large and small jobs.

Our staff are trained to US Department of Labor OSHA Standards. We encourage and document regular “tool box” safety talks and empower all workers to work safely and address safety issues as they are anticipated or encountered. Our Superintendents are trained and certified in first aid and CPR. All of our on-road vehicles are equipped with emergency flashing lights, reverse alarms, first aid kits and fire extinguishers.

Our quality, safety and environmental processes are developed in accordance with ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 and ISO 17025:2005.
